Attingal Municipality, with a population of about 37 thousand is Chirayinkeezhu sub district's the least populous municipality located in Chirayinkeezhu sub-district of Thiruvananthapuram district in the state Kerala in India. A study conducted last month reports that the brackish water Kadinamkulam Lake is not only the biggest inland water body of Thiruvananthapuram district but also one gifted with a rich aquatic ecosystem that qualifies it to be declared as a Ramsar site. The studies says that the 3.25 square kilometer lake is the most neglected the wetland of Thiruvananthapuram. The fish caught from the lake which used to be about 500 tonnes annually has now dropped to less than 100 tonnes. The reports says that if the lake is adequately protected it has the potential to provide the means of livelihood to at least 500 women through mussel and oyster farming. No mangroves The lake is linked to the sea through the Muthalapozhi estuary, but is almost completely devoid of mangroves though it has the environment to sustain mangrove forests. Attingal palace Attingal palace is the maternal home of the Travancore Royal family. The great rulers of the kingdom, including Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma were brought up in this palace situated at Kollampuzha, Attingal. The palace, built in stone and wood, according to Kerala architecture stands in a nearly 10 acre wide plot, a portion of which is privately owned now. The palace has four temples inside it, including the 700-year-old sanctorum that houses the Palliyara Bhagavathy. The temple of the family deity, Thiruvarattukavu Devi, is also seated in a temple inside the palace complex. The historically important palace, built in an 'ettukettu' structure is known for its elegance and austerity. The temples and the palace is currently under the control of the Devaswom Board.
